Eva Mendes Inspires Mono-Thread Mania

A recent Instagram post by Eva Mendes astonished her followers and fans. It became a viral news story: Page Six, Fox, People, and US Magazine were just a few of the outlets to feature the snapshot, but what the media described as “graphic” and “gruesome” is just a day at the office for us…

Eva is one of tens of thousands of women who seek the “shocking” treatment regularly—and have been doing so for years. So, aside from the fact that Hollywood starlets seldom disclose the details of their cosmetic procedures…we weren’t so surprised. Of course, they’re all getting threads. That’s not to say we don’t applaud her transparency!

Mendes posted the photo of herself with seven mono-threads inserted along her jawline earlier this month, with the caption:

“Oye! @marianalvergara has finally opened her own @beautyvillavergara! This spa-home away from home is incredible! No office with bad fluorescent lighting. No sterile office vibe. This is my go-to for all things beauty. A home where you can relax while being tortured by the best of the best. This is my happy place! Here I am getting some mono-threads. Ayyyy, dios! I’ll update you with results if you care.”

Beauty Villa Vergara, the Beverly Hills Med Spa where Eva received the treatment, reposted the shot, and answered several questions about the procedure. They explained, “Mono-threads activate collagen synthesis, which produces a gradual skin thickening, tightening, and rejuvenation effect.”

Admittedly, it can look startling if you’ve never seen a mono-threads treatment. Yet, this “graphic” treatment has kept women in the know gorgeous for years. The enormous curiosity inspired by Mendes’ post indicates that for much of the general public, she was divulging a heretofore unknown beauty secret. What we call “business as usual” still seems very unusual to some.

In recent years, perhaps thanks to platforms like Instagram, people are getting up to speed on how injectables like Botox and dermal fillers work. (Or maybe we have celebs like the Kardashians to thank.) The mainstream acceptance of these treatments as non-surgical beauty enhancers has grown by leaps and bounds. Still, PDO threads (as seen in Eva’s now-famous photo) are featured just as prominently in our arsenal of tools against time, and for a good reason. How have they stayed so under the radar?

Botox predictably relaxes fine lines and wrinkles resulting from facial animation (frown lines, crow’s feet, etc.) and can help slim overgrown jaw muscles or smooth banding in the neck. Dermal fillers restore plumpness and contour, giving you a more youthful balance of facial features. Both injectables are incredibly popular, non-invasive ways to look your best at any age, but PDO threads have bridged a gap in what non-surgical aesthetic treatments can accomplish. It’s actually about time they got their due!

Before PDO thread techniques, we could not significantly tighten, rejuvenate, or reposition the skin without surgical intervention. If you’re past a certain age, you know there comes a day when you start noticing that the quality of your skin is changing.

PDO Thread Lift

You begin seeing areas where the skin seems thinner, loose, or crinkly. The neck is commonplace to spot these changes, but eventually, most of our skin loses its youthful bounce. These concerns aren’t adequately addressed with most non-surgical interventions.

While fillers stimulate collagen and improve skin quality, PDO threads produce more dramatic results and can be used anywhere on the face or body. Skin treatments like microneedling and lasers help build collagen and renew the skin but require several treatments and often social downtime. Not to mention that none of the aforementioned treatments can meaningfully reposition lax skin, perhaps the sutures’ greatest claim to fame. PDO thread techniques not only complement, but they also elevate (quite literally) our capabilities in minimally-invasive facial rejuvenation.

PDO threads are absorbable, sterile surgical sutures made from a colorless, crystalline, biodegradable polymer. They’re used in surgical settings for wound closure and are prized for their safety, dependability, and strength. The threads are inserted beneath the skin, triggering a foreign body reaction that stimulates collagen synthesis. Once placed within the skin, they’re invisible.

The gradual process of thread absorption takes roughly six months. Meanwhile, the sutures are replaced by new collagen fibers that reinforce, tighten, and plump up the skin.

Thread procedures are done while the patient is awake, using only local anesthesia, and the downtime is minimal. Pressure is the only sensation you should feel as the threads are placed, and most patients say it’s far less uncomfortable than anticipated. After treatment, some minor bruising or swelling is expected, and you may experience slight tenderness for a few days.

PDO Process

Eva Mendes was treated with mono-threads in her photo: smooth, single-filament threads. They’re often inserted in a mesh pattern anywhere we want to create a more supportive collagen network. Barbed or cog threads are made for mechanically lifting the skin. They feature tiny barbs or spikes that grip the underside of the skin tissue, allowing us to hoist up slack skin physically. All PDO threads trigger new collagen, elastin, and blood vessel formation. Improved skin integrity reinforces the lifting effect. Combining mono and barbed threads is the ultimate way to tighten and tone sagging, thinning, or crinkly skin.

Eva’s followers were full of questions. She assured them it wasn’t as painful as it looked and promised to update them with her results. From the looks of the forty-six-year-old bombshell, this likely isn’t her first treatment with mono-threads. Her jawline appears quite firm and taught, and the best way to maintain that youthful definition is with regular treatments to keep that collagen up. (Since we haven’t treated her, we can’t say for certain what she has or hasn’t done, but it’s a safe bet that the gorgeous star didn’t wait until forty-six to begin these preventative interventions.)

One Instagram user asked Dr. Marina Vergara if the threads were meant to treat a “saggy neck.” The doctor explained that Eva doesn’t have a saggy neck and that this treatment was more about skin tightening and thickening to prevent sagging. (If a “saggy neck” is a concern, barbed threads to lift and mono threads to reinforce the surrounding skin would be our recommendation.)

Hats to Eva Mendes for serving us a rare glimpse behind the curtain of Hollywood perfection. It’s easy to forget that even stunning, self-assured starlets have insecurities and need a little upkeep to look their best. We’d say she’s doing an exceptional job.
